This week in maths, we looked at the formal written methods for subtraction. Children learned how to exchange properly and then we looked at some word problems involving subtraction. Answering in complete sentence answers is something we'll need to continue to work at, but as a whole, word problems were done quite well. Homework this week is further practise with formal subtraction and a chance to write your own word problems and solve them! We'll share the best/most creative word problems in class!
In English, we looked at punctuating speech correctly. We also looked at using different words for said. Children retold the story of Daedalus and Icarus for their extended write, with a focus on fronted adverbials, expanded noun phrases and speech punctuation. Next week we'll look at the myth of King Midas and the Golden Touch.
In topic, we finished off our unit on the Ancient Greeks. Children compared life in Athens to life in Sparta. They also assessed their learning by trying to answer the enquiry questions they wrote at the beginning of the unit. Lastly, they completed the post-learning assessment. Children enjoyed seeing how much they have learned since the start of the unit.
