This week in maths we looked at mental division. Children know what division is and how to divide in their heads. We also looked at dividing by 1 and 0 and discussed the different answers/non-answers. We'll look at formal short division next week.
In English, we started our new class novel, The Butterfly Lion by Michael Morpurgo. We read the first two chapters, then children had to predict what will happen next. Children learned what coordinating conjunction are and had a go at writing sentences using them. Homework this week is further practise with this. Furthermore, children also learned the difference between formal and informal language before writing a diary entry from the Boy's point of view. If you have this book at home, try not to spoil it by reading ahead please!
In topic, we started our new unit on The Mediterranean Sea. We'll be looking at why this area is so popular to go to on vacation. So far, children have used atlases to locate countries that have a border on the Mediterranean Sea. We'll be looking into specific Mediterranean countries next week in hopes of creating fact files later.
In PE, we are lucky enough to have a cricket specialist in this half term to help the children learn the basics associated with the sport. This will continue next week so be sure you have your PE kits in!
Spellings being tested next week are:
g sound spelled as gu

There is a high likelihood that our class will get a chance to have their swimming abilities evaluated next week. Letters will be sent out with full details when needed.
I hope everyone enjoyed the first week of 2018 back at school. Have a safe and enjoyable weekend.
