This week in maths we have been working on word problems involving all operation types. Some children are still having troubles working out which operation to use, but this is mostly because they haven't read the question carefully! Stick to the word problem solving steps! What are they again? We've also practised our times tables, which culminated with a Multiplication Olympics on Friday! Children seemed to enjoy this a lot. They competed in events like the book carry, the agility ladder run, the rope pull and the hurdles. The catch was that they had to answer a multiplication question correctly or they had to repeat the event! Teams were pretty even, but yellow house point group edged out everyone else to take top honours for the day.
In English, we went through what DADWAVER stands for and how using this organisation can help improve writing. We've started to use just the DAD part to improve description. Homework this week is more practise with this.
In Topic, we have begun our unit on sound. We watched a video to understand how the ear works, then wrote out a summary in our books using the proper names of the various parts. It's pretty impressive to think about what has to happen for us to hear! Hopefully the children have a new-found respect for their hearing. Take care of it, we know how complex it is now!
Top Spellers this week: Ellie E, Ethan E, Ella, Millie, Leighton, Matthew, Erin, Tom, Ally, Lucy, Sophie, Harry, Brooke and Grace. All 10/10...which was really like 20/20! Nice job! +2 HPs each.
Week 8 Spellings (other plural rules):
leaf/leaves
cliff/cliffs
scarf/scarves
business/businesses
forward/forwards
mountain/mountains
chief/chiefs
thief/thieves

Plural rules to think about this week:
- some words ending in f...drop the f and add ves.
- some words ending in s...add es.
- some words ending in other consonants...add s.
- some words ending in a consonant...double the consonant and add es.
As you can see, I've included some exceptions...as most spelling rules aren't perfect!
The Good Work Award went to Ally this week for his continued improvement with his spellings.
The Good Behaviour Award went to Millie this week for always being a helpful member of the class.
Class DOJO winner will be carried over to next week as we have a 5-way tie for the lead!
This week the class also won the Best Attendance Award! Way to go Year 4! :-)
Remember to read and record the date and pages read in your yellow log book. Be sure to study your spellings and times tables and also be sure you complete your homework (class and FISCH) well and on time!
We'll be starting to design our musical instruments next week so be sure to bring in some cereal boxes or cardboard tubes or whatever you have lying around so that you can make a masterpiece of music!
Have a great weekend everyone!
