In maths, we reviewed the formal methods of adding, subtracting and multiplying. Most children are able to add and subtract numbers with at least three digits now, including money amounts and numbers involving measurement units. All children have done well multiplying formally by one digit, with some children even moving on to multiplying formally by a two digit number. Homework this week is further practise multiplying using the formal method. I've included an example answer to help.
In English, we looked at being able to use description better. Children know that there are different types of adjectives (regular, comparative and superlative) and that each are used for different effects. We also looked at using adverbs better. I would love to see some more great examples of adjectives and adverbs being used. Write some in the comments section for a chance at some HPs. They've got to be really descriptive though!
We also continued reading our class novel: The Butterfly Lion. Many different African animals were mentioned, so children have been put into groups to research some of them. They are putting together information posters that they will present to the class next week.
In topic, we've ended our unit on magnetism. Children made a compass in groups and explored some related topics such as lodestones, Earth's magnetic pole and electromagnets. We'll be starting our new unit on healthy bones and teeth next week!
We also did some computing this week. Children experimented with different algorithms to write a flowchart to sequence a traffic light. I must say, I was quite impressed with their resilience. I explained that things will go wrong, but that that's a good thing, as they can fix and learn from their mistakes!
Top Spellers will be updated on Monday, but I remember that there were some new names that made the list, which is nice to see.

The weather this week highlighted the need to come to school prepared for any weather. Proper boots are recommended if it is wet, snowy or icy out, along with a warm hat, coat and gloves.
Please remember to read and record in your yellow log book so you can update your reading log page on Monday.
Have a great weekend everyone.
