We were really lucky at Howletch recently as, world famous, trumpeters Robert Farley and Howard Rowntree came to visit ahead of a concert they were playing at Durham Cathedral (with The Durham Singers). The musicians specialise in early music and they found time in their busy schedule to talk to us about different trumpets. Pupils from Years 4, 5 & 6 were shown how the trumpet has changed from its earliest forms to the modern day. The children were able to hear different styles of music and identified the difference in timbre between modern instruments and baroque ones. Both Robert and Howard were really impressed by the questions that were asked.
Following the demonstration, Robert and Howard worked with a brass ensemble formed from musicians from the Academy at Shotton Hall and Howletch brass players too. They showed different techniques and styles of playing, some lucky people even got a chance to have a go with a baroque trumpet - it was really hard!
Everyone really enjoyed the afternoon and the fantastic opportunity to work with world renowned musicians.
Thanks Robert and Howard.
